For the last  two and a half years  or so, there is a silent battle going on in Israel.

It is a battle without physical fighting and without firearms.

But it is a battle that could severely harm to Israel’s economy.

This battle is between  the currency speculators / among them international Banks on one side versus the State of
Israel.

Speculators decided to bet on exchange rate of the Israeli currency (the shekel) and against the dollar of the United States. That bet accompanied with  huge flow of capital into Israe while taking advantage of the margin gap between Israel interest rates and those of the United States (where the interest rate to zero).

One purpose of this capital – to exploit the difference in interest income and enjoy the speed while maintaining the low exchange rate against the dollar.

In this war speculators produce different pressures on the Bank of Israel to raise interest rates and thus drag the strengthening of the shekel
against the dollar when they are the sole beneficiaries .

The conduct of international banks among them well known European and American banks can be described merely as  ”currencies locusts.”

Locust is an insect destroying all the green vegetation where it lands, causing severe damage to nature and landscape.

International banks that wish to drag the strengthening of the Israeli currency, without real investments in  Israel are merely “currencies locusts”.

Israeli shekel, can drag the state into  considerable difficulties relating to the  export of Israeli exporters (those in the
electronics industry, software and services exports), and eventually drag the Israeli economy into recession.

If this scenario will occur then the economy could run into serious difficulties, and it will  take a long term to get out of those difficulties .

All of these relating on  Israel’s growth rates, ignoring the fact that growth came from an unhealthy side of economy as small as Israel, that is aimed at consumption.

This growth is accompanied by inflation which part of it can’t be controlled by Israel  as it is the out come  commodities prices.

Bank of Israel Governor Stanley Fischer has no real tools to deal with the foreign “currencies locust”

The power of  regulation in this matter are in the hands of the  Israel’s Finance Ministry that does not lift a finger to fight this battle, despite some statements a few months ago about the  intention to impose turnover  tax on transactions in foreign currency that will
exceed certain amount and won’t be invested in real businesses.

Since then nothing was done and the risk to the Israeli economy  is growing.

Anyone who claims Israel’s real estate bubble is not similar to the one that exploded in the U.S. absolutely right analysis of the reasons but refuses to look into the basis and the results.

    • Could you care to explain the similarities between Israel and the US further please?
I don’t see it, As far as the media and one can study from the Israeli statistics bureau (and the data you provided which is partially from the same source) it seems like the prices go up in Israel from a rather natural cause – less supply (lack of buildings) and while it may keep crawling up, it doesn’t mean that Israeli banks would allow mortages without cover, and infact I just recentley read that they are going to only allow mortages with a 40% downpayment. So while having a bubble might be theoretically possible, it’s not there as we speak – prices just naturally go up – (they probably need to unfreeze lands in center Israel to solve this) and even if you think it is, I still didn't catch the similarties, do explain. I still favor Mr Gabriel's position on this matter.

  3. Stanley Fisher said today , that it is enough that 0.5% of borrowers will enter a state of insolvency – and the banks will start to lose money. In 1.2 million families are paying a mortgage, 0.5% = 6000 families
By the end of 2010 (when interest rates were close to 2%) 40% increase in mortgage assistance applicants
3200 already reported that they are being close to insolvency
