But who really cares? Seriously!

Ok, both Appleinsider and Tuaw are reporting that Apple will release a new line of iMacs in this coming Tuesday, 3 May 2011. Citing “people familiar with the matter who have continually provided accurate information”.

So the rumor continues to grow and indicates that the next generation of iMacs will have second generation Intel Core i5 and i7 chips together with a Thunderbolt port. “It could not be confirmed at this time if the new iMacs will feature changes to the display sizes,” says Tuaw. Appleinsider also states that its sources said the early morning hours of May 3 at Apple Retail stores will be a “visual night” which means that the new iMacs should be on sale the day they are announced.

“Visual night” is the term when Apple retail employees stay through the night and change merchandising and display planograms in the store in order to prepare a new product for sale. In this case, the older iMacs will be removed and replaced by the newly announced models. Both sources indicate that these were predicted earlier on by Cnet that also indicated that the new iMacs will ship in April or May 2011. The iMac line has not been updated since 27 July, 2010.

Ok, so you’ve read thus far, and the point is? Wow, Apple is going to refresh their iMac lines. So exciting! Really. As if that wasn’t obvious enough. Surprisingly, strolling around the net, I’ve found so many people who “like” that on Facebook. But what scares me is that people are either blind or dazzled by Apple’s marketing team (which does indeed a great job). It hasn’t been more than two weeks and everyone seems to forget Apple’s iPhone secret tracking feature . All that buzz around the new products simply empowers these companies, and we as consumers are creating the demand for them. Now don’t get me wrong. I myself use an Apple Macbook Pro, but it does not make me a brand fanatic. What happened to the good old days, when there was actual competition in the market? Don’t you love to save money I ask? Would you not prefer competitive pricing? Moronizing our consumerism behaviour will not lead to any significant change. We can start a small change, and actually create a real demand and shift some of the balance. But I guess that won’t happen anytime soon. For all you Apple “fanatics”, how many of you bought the iPhone 3G when it came out? And how many of you bought the iPhone 3GS when it came out and sold your old phone? How many bought the iPad and are now running to change it for the iPad 2? How many of you got the iPhone 4 and can now only wish to swap it for a white iPhone 4?

It’s been roughly a week and a half ago when two researchers uncovered Apple’s naughty tracking feature hidden within the iPhone and iPads that were update with the latest iOS in June 2010. Many people, including yours truly, uttered indignation towards Apple after reading the latest discovery and not hearing a single word from Apple. Heck, it got more viral than the royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.

Shortly thereafter, like in all fairytales, Apple has responded to the mass as if they can just make it go away. In a news release Apple said “The reason the iPhone stores so much data is a bug we uncovered and plan to fix shortly… We don’t think the iPhone needs to store more than seven days of this data.” Apple added and conveyed that a software update will be released in a few weeks time, which, among other goodies, will fix this so called “bug” and will also fix another obvious bug, which prevented iPhone and iPad 3G users from being able to turn off location logging on their mobile devices.

Seriously? Steve Jobs, is that the best you could come up with? Is Apple really going to hide it’s naughtiness behind a veil you so wishfully call a “bug”? I guess Apple’s “brilliant” team came up with an argument it’s a bug, and thought “oh yes, it’s a mob, they love us – the heck with them”. Guess what Stevie, we’re not that blind. Let’s analyse what Apple conveyed again, and see whether or not Mr Venn would approve it as a sound argument. On the one hand, Apple is claiming this is a bug. On the other hand, “the next version of Apple’s iOS will store data about a phone’s location for only seven days instead of four months, as was previously the case,” says Apple. As mentioned above, Apple doesn’t think the devices should store more than seven days.Really? I tell you one thing is for certain; Apple does not think. At least not when posting a press release with so many controversial comments. Should a class action or any other legal action be brought about against Apple, it seems to be somewhat of a hard nut to crack. But come on will you? A “bug” is the best you could do?

There were a few news reports that unveiled some interesting information about Apple filing for a patent, one of which I preferred was at a Hong Kong portal named Aiiyah. In an article Aiiyah named iSpy it pegged out that Ronald Huang, an Apple senior engineering manager, filed a patent last month, “Location histories for location aware devices”. Going back to the “bug” argument, it seems more likely that this so called “bug” was made with full intention and obviously enough without disclosing this to the “mob”.

Notwithstanding Apple claims it does not have access to individual location data in the file that was created as a result of a bug, the company says, many users were concerned that it even existed. Politicians, public officials, bloggers, news reporters, and pretty much everyone who spoke his or her mind complained that the file was “unencrypted,” meaning that if someone got access to an iPhone, iPad or a synced computer, they could steal this file with relative ease.

Don’t shout wolf, Apple says.

“The location data that researchers are seeing on the iPhone is not the past or present location of the iPhone, but rather the locations of Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers surrounding the iPhone’s location, which can be more than one hundred miles away from the iPhone”. With pressure hyping over Apple to explain why its mobile devices were tracking users’ locations without their knowledge, government authorities worldwide are investigating whether or not Apple’s data collection violated any laws in those countries, according to Bloomberg.

The notion of a rotten apple always smells strengthened when the company noted it is “now collecting anonymous traffic data to build a crowd-sourced traffic database with the goal of providing iPhone users an improved traffic service in the next couple of years”. Does this sound like an excuse to you too? What happened to the “bug”? So what’s the gist of this you might be asking? One would believe Apple should apologise to their fans for its upheaval, especially in light of the upcoming iPhone 5 and Lion operating system release.

“The iPhone is not logging your location. Rather, it’s maintaining a database of Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers around your current location, some of which may be located more than one hundred miles away from your iPhone, to help your iPhone rapidly and accurately calculate its location when requested,” Apple pretentiously said. As if the situation is so complicated we cannot grasp it.

Overall, the company did not so much apologize to users for this snafu as tell them that they just didn’t understand how complicated this situation is.

It added: “Providing mobile users with fast and accurate location information while preserving their security and privacy has raised some very complex technical issues which are hard to communicate in a soundbite. Users are confused, partly because the creators of this new technology (including Apple) have not provided enough education about these issues to date.” It also noted that “Apple will continue to be one of the leaders in strengthening personal information security and privacy”.

Ok, you got to admire Apple’s marketing and communication. Let’s not forget the previous “scandal” with the iPhone 4’s antenna and the full reception failure, which was diffused with an inspiring move by Steve Jobs shortly after the discovery of that “bug”. Like many other people, although I’m not an Apple fan, I did buy an iPhone 4. Why? Not because of Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs keynote, but because I thought it can come in handy. And indeed it is. But one must be wondering what kind of bumper will save Apple’s tracking blunder now. Better yet, for how long will Apple’s honeymoon period with the community last? My guess is as good as yours, but I am of the belief that this grace period is about to be over. The average Joe is not a moron in spite of what Apple may think, and as competition cultivates from companies like RIM with their Blackberry Playbook, the Motorola Atrix and many others, Apple’s future is hanging on their next move. I think it’s the right time to say – Apple, you have been gizmoroned.

However, have you stopped for a second to ponder on the reason we should remember so many, sometime long “codes” / website names AKA domain names / website addresses? Wouldn’t it be nicer if we simply, did not have to?

It is my personal believe that the evolution of the address field will eventually move us away from the address line. In this post I’ll try to explain the reasons for my evaluation.

1 – Let’s go back in time

Some of us may remember the days of DOS. Similar to today’s command prompt users used to type in weird combination in order to run different applications or scripts. If you’ll be caught using it today by a younger person he’ll probably think your some sort of a hacker.

Back in those days that’s how people ran applications, and took it for granted. That was just the way it was. Then windows and apple OS revolutionized the way we run applications. No longer does one need to remember commands such as “dir” to view the content of folders and “cd” to navigate to different directories. No longer does one need to remember that “fdisk” is a utility to partition and manage your hard drive and so on. The day of the visualized way has arrived. Now users take icons and double clicking for granted. Comparing command prompt to the address bar isn’t that farfetched.

2 – Where are we now?

Did you notice that Internet Explorer 9 looks nothing like Internet Explorer 6? If you look at the newer browsers, apart from speed and compatibility, the most noticeable change would be how there’s more space for the website itself, and less space for other stuff. So what’s getting downsized? You guessed it; the new version of Internet Explorer 9 is the first major browser to dramatically reduce the size of the address bar.

Questions asked now are: will other browsers follow? And if so, what would be the next step? Maybe the address bar would become an autohide / scroll over the top to show component?

3 – The future of mobile browsing

Many would agree that the future of the internet lies in the mobile devices and while I agree with the statement I also think that the above has an effect on how the future internet will shape. Using mobile devices could eventually lead to a situation where most web applications will actually be applications on the cloud or downloadable applications and the data would be kept online. If this is the trend then eventually, not only that we won’t use the address bar as often, but who will even need a browser?

So, if the prediction is right, we still need a substitute for the address bar do we? Moving most online applications to the cloud could be one option, but it still doesn’t cover it all – what about the not-so-far future? It seems as if the “war” is on the homepage spot on your browser, the one site we need to cover 99% of our online time. It also seems like the major sides are Google and Facebook, with Google already giving a fair substitute to the address bar and Facebook keeps on adding more and more features just to keep you online on Facebook – email, chat, integrated Bing search engine, social news, etc – and while I think Facebook is winning, It’s still not my homepage.

What does it mean?

It is my belief that conglomerates long ago understood the potential of the internet and this is yet another move towards taking over it. It basically means that the internet, once a great place for entrepreneurs with a great idea and a low budget, would become a place where money speaks. The death of the address bar would only be a sign that this is where we’re moving and already big companies are taking their sits, Google for search engines, Facebook for social, Amazon for shopping and Apple for music, media and who knows what else.
